Author’s POV

All the family members began giving out gifts to Aaranya for her pehli rasoi, and then came the muh dikhai.

She was sitting on the couch with her face covered, while many other guests entered to see the new bride closely.

His dadi sa said, “Yuvraj beta, you go first.”

Yuvraj nodded, excitedly, as he walked towards Aaranya and slowly pulled up her veil.

She winked, making him a bit shy. “Ab mera gift dijiye.” She said, and he shrugged

(Now give me my gift.)

“Par mai toh kuch laya hi nahi hu.” He said with a shrug, making her pout in disappointment.

(But I haven’t brought anything.)

“Areyy dekhiye koi aaya hai.” He said, suddenly turning towards the door, making everyone’s attention turn away from them.

(See, someone is here)

Just then, he leaned in and pecked on her pout while she was still distracted by finding out who was there on the door.

“Bete waha toh koi bhi nahi hai.” His father said, looking at him, confused by the sudden turn in events, while Aaranya was blushing at the sudden peck and realised why Yuvraj had called that out.

(Son, there is no one there.)

“Besharm ho gaye hai aap Raj.” She said under her breathe only meant for him to hear.

(You have turned very shameless.)

He shrugged, talking in the same tone to her, “Srif aapke liye” He said with a wink before turning to his father “Yeahh, I just felt like someone was there.”

(Just for you)

They nodded.

“Fir aap kuch bhi nahi laaye?” She asked, looking disappointed and slightly hurt.

(So you haven’t brought anything?)

Look at Aaranya disappointed, he smiled, his teasing demeanour lowered as he reached for his pocket and retrieved a bracelet.

It was a beautiful gold bracelet with intricate diamond detailing, with flowers and moons over the top.

She smiled and gave her hand in his, waiting for him as he tied the bracelet around her wrist.

Next up, his mother came; she looked at her and rotated her hands around her head as if warding off the evil.

She then took over her gold bangles with multicoloured traditional designs and made her wear them as she spoke softly, “Beta, these are hereditary. My mother-in-law gave it to me, and I am passing it on to you.”

Further, his kaki sa, kaka sa, papa sa, dada sa, dadi sa, Aryan, shivika, rudra and all the relatives turn by turn came to see the bride and praised her.

“Priyanka bahu toh bahot sundar laayi ho” His mother's sister praised while another lady agreed while speaking “Haan Yuvraj ki pasand bahot pyaari hai.”

(Priyanka, you have brought a very beautiful daughter-in-law.)(Yes, Yuvraj’s choice is very pretty.)

Just then, his bua, the statue of old beliefs, came forward with the coming up ritual “Chalo bahot ho gayi muh dikhai ab charanamrita ki rasam kar lo.” She said while snapping her fingers.

(Okay, enough with muh dikhai now lets do the ritual of Charanamrita.)

A maid came with a mug of holy water and an empty tub.

Yuvraj was asked to sit down on a chair. They both looked confused for a while.

Priyanka tried to step forward, “Nahi Shilpa jiji yeh rasam nahi hogi.” She said, trying to put away the things, but Shilpa just dismissed her.

(No sister, this ritual would not happen.)

The rest of the people also tried to argue, but she listened to no one.

Some other relatives also agreed with her, “Saalo ka riwaz hai yeh, chalta aaya hai aur chalta rahega.” A lady said.

(This ritual had been going on for years, and it must continue.)

As Aaranya was expected to wash Yuvraj’s feet and drink the water.

She bent down, knowing better than to argue in front of these patriarchal people.

Yuvraj stopped her “Nahi Anya! You won't do this ever. Mai apni Lakshmi bana kar laaya hu tumhe. Sasur ji se aur apne dil se vaada kiya hai tumhe apni season se upar maanunga. Toh yeh rasam toh nahi hogi.” He said firmly while standing up from the stool and pulling her up from the floor along with him.

(No, Anya! You would never do this. I brought you as my Lakshmi. I promised your father and my heart that I would take care of you more than my breath. So this ritual would not happen. Ever.)

He gently escorted her to the stool and made her sit while placing the tub under her feet. The tub contained another bowl, which was meant to collect the holy water back.

He washed her feet gently, his fingers brushing against her feet with love and care. He looked completely devoted to her.

Aranaya couldn’t stop the shock on her face.

She had expected him to stop this. That’s why she didn’t say anything.

But all he was doing was just another level.

His bua tried to come forward and argue, “Kya kar rahe ho Yuvraj tum aur kyu kar rahe ho yeh sab.”

(What are you doing Yuvraj and why are you doing this?)

He didn’t speak, just touched her feet one last time, his fingers lingering for an extra second as if she was a divine idol of the temples and he was completely devoted to it.

He brushed his fingers over his forehead as if completing one made-up ritual to satisfy his heart and love before picking up the bowl and standing up.

He threw the water straight on his bua’s face.

“Lucky you are, I didn’t throw acid on this shitty face of yours.” He said from his teeth while glaring at her and her mentality before adding, “Ab aur bhi bezzati karwani hai kya aapko aur aapki betiyon ko ek hi din mai. Just take the damn hint and leave right now.” He said angrily, his voice booming all over the palace.

(Do you and your daughters want to get insulted more in one single day………)

His parents and the rest of the family looked proud instead of angry or disappointed.

His mother and father came forward.

His mother gently caressed his head while his father proudly tapped his shoulder and took him into a tight hug “You made me so proud son. I couldn’t have got a better son.”

Yuvraj nodded and hugged him back, looking satisfied, still shaking with anger at the audacity of the woman.

His mother said softly from behind, “Beta ab use kamre mai le ja, thak gayi hogi woh.”

(Son take her back to the room, she must be tired too.)

He nodded and gently took Aaranya’s hand in his as they walked back into their room.

As soon as Aaranya and Yuvraj entered the room, Aaranya was already looking like she would burst into tears any second.

The door closed behind them with a dull thud.

Aarnaya turned around and instantly hugged Yuvraj with a fierce force. Yuvraj was taken aback for a moment, but then he gently pulled her closer and hugged her while kissing her forehead softly.

“Kya hua jaana?” He asked softly, his voice velvet yet smooth enough to make it melt over it.

(What happened?)

She just shook her head, her face buried into his chest. “Thank you Raj” She said in a small voice.

He pulled back just enough to look into her eyes “Hone wali rani sa ese paraya kar dengi aap hame?” He asked while looking at her with a gaze that made her knees go weak.

(Soon to me, highness, you'll make me a stranger like this?)

So loving!

She shook her head, “Aapki badi bua thi woh aur aapne unke khilaf jaakar hamare liye bola.” She said her voice was hoarse with emotion.

(She is your elder relative, and you spoke against her because of me.)

“Anya, wo srif rishtedaaro ki bheed mai se ek aurat hai aur aap toh meri rooh hai. Toh aapki sath nahi diya maine. Mai apne liye lada apne rooh ke liye.” He confessed without an essence of hesitancy.

(Anya she was just a single person in the crowd of relatives but you are my soul. So technically I didn’t support you. I fought for my soul.)

She smiled, “I love you so damn much! And it grows more and more with every second day!" She said and kissed his cheek while tiptoeing on his feet.

He turned and pushed himself on the bed, pulling Aaranya on top of him while kissing her passionately.

“Yuvraj hatiye na niche sab kya soch rahe honge.” She said while blushing against his lips.

(Yuvraj get aside god knows what all everyone must be thinking.)

“Sochne do Anya… abhi toh meri nazro mai srif tum aur tum ho.” He said while turning her over and pulling back.

(Let them think… for now I just have you and only you in my sight.)

Aaranya’s POV

I was sitting in the royal garden alone while looking at the lush greenery. My life has been nothing but a rollercoaster, but now it seems to be at rest and stable.

I found my way to my love.

While I was thinking Aryan and Rudra shouted from behind me, making me flinch in shock.

Looking at my expression, they laughed while I tried to look frustrated, but failed miserably as I ended up laughing,

“Kya kar rahe ho dono natkhat!” I scolded them while a smile on my face that hasn’t left my lips since the evening.

(What are you both doing?)

“Bhabhi… aao aapko mehel dikha kar laate hai,” Rudra said excitedly while pulling me up from the bench and leading me towards the entrance.

(Bhabhi, let’s go we will show you the palace.)

“Yeh dekhiye yaha par baba sa aur bade papa sa ke kamre hai.” Aryan said while pointing towards two large rooms in the hallway, and then he turned towards another alleyway in the palace.

(See this here, father and uncle’s rooms are.)

“Yaha par mera, Rudra aur Shivika ke kamre hai. Shivi ka kamra toh ab band hi rehta hai par ham dono ke kamre yahi hai.” He said while Rudra exchanged a look with Aryan.

(Here mine, Rudra’s and Shivika’s rooms are. Shivi’s room stays closed nowadays but we are here only.)

“Chalo bhabhi ko waha lekar chalte hai.” He said to which Aryan teasingly replied “Yaar rehne dete hai.”

(Let’s take bhabhi there.)(No lets drop that plan.)

I looked way too invested in knowing now “Btao na please…” I said in a whiny tone

(Pleasee tell…)

Rudra sighed exaggeratedly, “Haan haan theek hai, chaliye.” He said while leading me towards a staircase.

(Okay okay fine, come.)

Aryan spoke while walking beside me “Bhaiya ka office hai yaha srif.” He said as they opened the door.

(Only Bhaiya’s office is here.)

It was a big office. A home office.

With lots of awards from his business and royal words all over the wall.

The walls were painted in a royally elegant colour, beige and teal. While a whole wall was made up of glass, through which the entire city could be seen.

It had a gate through which a balcony started.

In the office, a large table was placed beside a shelf with decks of files and a big, comfortable leather chair.

I walked towards the balcony while Rudra and Aryan started leaving, “Kaha jaa rahe ho tum dono?” I asked while looking at them, confused.

(Where are you both going?)

Aryan shrugged, “Bhabhi aap jaoge toh kuch nahi kahenge bhaiya par hame daant padegi. Office mai kisi ko bhi aana allowed nahi hai.” He said while Rudra nodded.

(Bhabhi, if you will go inside, bhaiya won't say anything, but he’ll scold us as it is not allowed.)

I looked at them for another moment with understanding and finally agreed, “Theek hai jao”

(Okay then go)

I pushed open the balcony door and saw a figure, a very familiar one, with his back towards me.

I decided to surprise him as I back hugged him. “Raj!!!” I chirped cheerfully

But as he turned, what I saw left me in shock.

“Aap cigarette pi rahe the?” I asked, looking at him with disappointment. My earlier cheerfulness faded.

(Were you using a cigarette?)

He quickly disposed of the cigarette in the ashtray and ate a mint while looking at me with a nod and eyes downcast like a schoolboy caught stealing candies.

“Bataiye Yuvraj shant kyu hai aap?” I asked sharply as I didn’t expect this from him. “Aap toh nahi peete the na?”

(Tell me Yuvraj why are you quiet?)(You didn’t used to have these habits na?)

He looked up, slightly ashamed, but I didn’t lower my intensity of glare. Some might think that I am overreacting, but I love him and I have some rights over him.

“Sorry… Tum jab 10 saal gayab ho gayi thi. Maine udasi mai ciggarte khareedna chalu kiya tha aur fir aadat lag gayi.” He confessed his voice had tinged into smallness.

(Sorry… When you disappeared for 10 years, I started this habit from sadness and it turned into addiction.)

My eyes softened as I hugged him tightly wanting to speak more but didn't. “Kasam khaiye meri… aage se kabhi nahi peeyenge.” I said

(Swear on me that youll never touch a cigarette again.)

He nodded, pulling back to look at me, “Mujhe kasam tumhari aaj se tumhara pati kabhi ciggrate ko dekhega bhi nahi.” He swore, and I smiled against his chest relieved.

(I swear on you that your husband would never even look at a cigarette ever.)

“Good!” I praised as we went into his office.

“Waise aaj meri little fox mere office mai kaise?” He asked as I finally sighed, realising the motive of surprising him I came with.

(Anyways how’s my little fox in my office today?)

“Aryan aur Rudra mehel dikha rahe the hame toh socha aapko surprise kar du.” I said and he smiled.

(Aryan and Rudra were showing me the palace so we thought to surprise you.)

He muttered under his breath, thinking I didn’t hear “Surprise ke liye meri biwi ko yaha chod ke gaye the ya meri fielding set karwane ke liye.”

(They brought my wife here to surprise me or trouble me god knows.)

But I heard it clearly and tried my best to hide my expression as I asked him “Kuch kaha kya aapne?”

(Did you say something?)

“Nahi. Nahi. Bahot aacha kiya tum aayi.” He said while pulling me towards him on the chair as we started talking and didn’t realise the time passing.

(No. No. it was great infact that you came.)
